Packed Hospital Bag

What to Pack for Delivering a Baby: Tips from a Mom of Four

As a mom of four, I’ve had my fair share of hospital bags! Each time, I learned a little more about what’s truly helpful and what can stay at home. So whether you’re a first-time mom or adding a new little one to the family, I want to share some essentials that helped me feel comfortable, prepared, and even a little pampered during each birth.

Comfortable Clothing

Comfort is key! Loose, comfy clothing is essential, both for your hospital stay and the trip home. I recommend packing a nursing-friendly robe or gown for easy breastfeeding and those first sweet moments of skin-to-skin. This cozy robe was a lifesaver for me. Nursing bras and soft shirts are also essentials; they help with easy access and keep you feeling at ease. And don’t forget a pair of loose, comfortable pants or pajamas to go home in.

Personal Care Items

When it comes to personal care, packing your daily toiletries can make all the difference. Hospital bathrooms aren’t always stocked with the comforts you’re used to, so I always brought my toothbrush, toothpaste, and a mini shampoo. If there’s a particular body wash or lotion you love, bring it along—it adds a little touch of home.

For postpartum, pack some essentials like overnight pads and panty liners. Some hospitals provide these, but having your preferred items can be comforting.

Entertainment

Labor can be long and unpredictable, and having something to pass the time can be a lifesaver. A book, tablet, or e-reader can help take your mind off things or pass the hours during early labor. Plus, it’s nice to have options for those quieter moments after the baby arrives.

Snacks and Water

After giving birth, you’ll want snacks you love on hand. Hospital food can be limited or simply not what you’re in the mood for. Healthy snacks are great for a quick energy boost. Bring along a refillable water bottle too; staying hydrated is especially important while you recover and start breastfeeding. Drink mixes can be a great boost of electrolytes for after you give birth!

Baby Items

The essentials for your newborn will include a few outfits, a pack of diapers, and wipes. You’ll also need a car seat for the trip home, which is essential to have properly installed before you arrive at the hospital. If you plan to use cloth diapers, pack a few with a wet bag to bring them home in.

Essential Documents

Be sure to pack any important documents. Bring your insurance card, any necessary ID, and a copy of your birth plan if you have one. These are usually requested when you check in, so keep them in an easily accessible pocket of your bag.

Comfort Items

Hospitals try to make you comfortable, but there’s nothing quite like having your favorite pillow or a soft blanket from home. It’s a small thing, but having familiar items can help you feel more relaxed. I found that bringing a few comfort items gave me a sense of calm during all my hospital stays. This travel pillow is a great option if you need extra support.

Packing Your Hospital Bag

Packing your hospital bag doesn’t have to be overwhelming. These essentials helped me feel at ease, prepared, and focused on what mattered most—welcoming each of my babies with comfort and confidence. I hope these tips help make your experience a little smoother, too.

And once your little one is here, don’t forget to capture these precious moments. Those early days are fleeting, and newborn photos are a beautiful way to hold onto them. Contact me to book a session and create timeless images that celebrate your growing family.
